Abstract:

Dental diseases in children have high prevalence the purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of oral health game on brushing skill and plaque score of school children. A Quasi-experimental study was carried on 220 subjects randomly and sampling was done on the fourth grade's girl students. A checklist was used to measuring the brushing skill and plaque score. t. test showed that there is a significant statistical difference between two groups brushing skill (P= 0.000) and plaque score (P= 0.000). The effectiveness of oral health game was 96.9% in brushing skill and the plaque score to 14.7%.

Background and Objectives: In addition to diseases, patients with psychiatric disorders are at risk of oral and dental problems. The present study aims to investigate dental mouth and oral pathologic lesions in women with psychiatric disorders hospitalized in two hospitals in Isfahan, Iran. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 43 women with psychiatric disorders hospitalized in Modarres and Khorshid hospitals in Isfahan, Iran in 2019 participated. Using a checklist, their demographic information including age, duration of hospitalization, type of disease, and educational level were recorded. Then, their oral cavity was examined in terms of dental health and pathological lesions. The data were analyzed in SPSS software, version 21 using Fishers’ exact test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and logistic regression analysis. P<0.05 was statistically significant. Results: Of 43 women with a mean age of 36.7±13.8 years, 72% had oral lesions. The most common lesions were red-white lesions (23.1%). Moreover, 37.2% of women had dry mouth and 16.3% had self-inflicted oral injury. Dry mouth was significantly associated with the type of lesions and diseases. Self-inflicted oral injury was significantly associated with acute ulcers (P=0.001). Conclusion: Dry mouth and self-inflicted oral injury are high among hospitalized women with psychiatric disorders in Isfahan, Iran. Regular follow-up in psychiatric patients can reduce the incidence of oral lesions and dental caries, or help in their earlier diagnosis and better treatment.

Abstract:

Introduction: Oral health literacy (OHL) is considered a new determinant of health. This study aimed to investigate OHL and its relationship with clinical indicators of oral health, as well as oral health behaviors, among patients attending the Dental School of the Islamic Azad University of Isfahan, Isfahan, Iran. Materials and Methods: The authors conducted a cross-sectional study on volunteering patients attending dental school for the first time in 2015, who were selected through convenience sampling. Self-administered questionnaires requested information about patients’,OHL using Oral Health Literacy-Adult Questionnaire, as well as patients’,oral health behaviors. Clinical examinations were conducted to measure Decayed, Missing due to caries, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Pearson correlation coefficient, Spearman correlation coefficient, independent t-test, as well as linear and logistic regression models, served for statistical analysis (P-value<0. 05). Results: Among 202 participants, 64. 5% were women. The mean age of participants was 33. 4±, 10. 6 years, and the mean score of OHL was 52. 3±, 19. 8. Individuals with a higher score of OHL reported better oral health behaviors (P-value<0. 05). The OHL was negatively associated with DMFT (r=-0. 140, P-value=0. 047), Decayed Teeth (r=-0. 179, P-value=0. 01) and Missing Teeth (r=-0. 208, P-value=0. 003). On the other hand, individuals with higher OHL scores had more filled teeth (r=0. 148, P-value=0. 04). No association was revealed between OHL and maximum CPI (P-value>0. 05). Conclusion: Oral health literacy of patients attending dental school was moderate. Those patients with a higher OHL reported better oral health behaviors and had a lower history of dental caries. Therefore, it is essential to increase the OHL of individuals to improve their oral health status.

Abstract:

Background and Objectives: Caries in primary dentition affects the quality of child’s life and can interfere with the child's daily activities and growth process. This disease is affected by various factors such as diet, oral hygiene and socioeconomic factors. Considering the importance of the awarness of mother in a child’s life, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the dmft index and the level of mothers’ awareness related to oral hygiene. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 432 mothers with children under 7 years old. After determining the dmft index, the children's demographic information and the mothers' awareness level were evaluated with 13 questions. In order to analyze the data, Kruskal-Wallis test and Pearson's correlation coefficient were used. Results: The mean score of awareness for mothers with boys and girls respectively was 3.70±2.25 and mothers 3.58±2.36 with no significant difference (P=0.757). The most correct answers from mothers to questionnaire’s questions, were given to the size of toothpaste for children aged 3 to 6 years old (70.8%) and the time to start flossing for children (38.2%). The relationship between mother's awareness and dmft index was not significant (P=0.076). Conclusion: Mothers' knowledge level had no significant relationship with children's dental caries, but mothers' knowledge of caries prevention was lower than mean. Although maternal knowledge is only one of the several factors that can influence children's oral health behaviors, mothers' education should be considered as an important intervention to caries prevention.

Abstract:

Background: The process of obtaining oral health information, evaluating its concepts and using appropriate prevention and treatment processes in the field of Oral health literacy (OHL) is within the scope of health literacy and is the link between culture and society, health system, education system, and oral health consequences. The purpose of the current study was to investigate OHL in first grade high school students in Babol. Materials and Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study on 383 high school students in Babol 2019 using multi-stage cluster sampling method in the first stage of school selection and in the second stage of class selection. The data were collected using demographic, oral health behaviors assessment and Oral Health Literacy Questionnaire. OHL questionnaire have 17 questions in four sections of reading comprehension, numeracy, listening and decision making. Regression analysis, Anova, T-test, and chi square test were used for data analysis (SPSS 23). Findings: The mean score of students' OHL was 8. 33 ± 2. 004, and 11. 7%, 26. 1%, and 61. 9% of the students were with adequate, borderline, and inadequate levels of OHL, respectively. According to the analysis, OHL had a significant relationship with income, father’ s education, tooth brushing, and use of beverage foods. Conclusion: The results showed that OHL was insufficient among students, and more efforts and interventions were required to improve oral health and increase oral health literacy among students.
